An F-35’s F135 is an afterburning, two-spool low-bypass turbofan: intake air is split between a bypass stream and the core, the core air is compressed, mixed with fuel and burned, then hot gases drive turbines that power the compressors while core jet and bypass flow together produce thrust; an afterburner injects extra fuel into the exhaust for short bursts of added thrust.
